Never Have I Ever season 4: Release date, plot and trailer

Fans will of course be sad to learn that the fourth season will be the end of the road for the Mindy Kaling's comedy but, as cast member Jaren Lewison – who portrays Ben on the Mindy Kaling show – previously teased when he said season 4 will "blow people's minds", it's certainly given Devi and the rest of the gang a good send off.

Alongside Ramakrishnan, season 4 sees the return of plenty of other familiar faces as well as some newcomers, including Michael Cimino, who plays Ethan, another student at Sherman Oaks High.

Never Have I Ever season 4 release date: When will it air?

Never Have I Ever season 4 arrived on Netflix on Thursday 8th June.

News of the show's recommission was bittersweet for many fans, as the fourth season is also the show's last.

"We are thrilled to have two more seasons of Never Have I Ever," said Netflix's head of global TV Bela Bajaria when seasons 3 and 4 were announced (via Deadline). "It's everything we want in a Netflix comedy series: authentic, specific, funny and full of heart.

"I love that a story I relate to so deeply – about a young, Indian-American girl – hits on so many universal truths that resonate with just about everyone.

"We're eternally grateful to [co-creators] Mindy [Kaling] and Lang [Fisher], and the wildly talented cast. And we can't wait for everyone to see the final two seasons."

President of Universal Television, Erin Underhill, added: "Four seasons of Never Have I Ever is truly exciting and a little bittersweet because, as a loyal fan, I'd love Devi's journey to go on forever. But, just like high school, all great things must come to an end.

"We can't wait to experience all of the messiness, the LOLs and the tears that will surely unfold in Devi's senior year."

Never Have I Ever season 4 plot: What will happen?

Change was in the air at the end of Never Have I Ever season 3.

Devi secured a place at an exclusive study school for her final year, which would have improved her chances of bagging a spot at one of top universities. But she chose to remain at Sherman Oaks to spend as much time as possible with her mum and friends before heading off into the next chapter of her life – she's got her sights set on Princeton.

That means there will be no avoiding Ben, who she snogged in the finale – and in season 4, we find out the pair had sex, which creates further drama between them.

And in big news, Paxton is also back. At the end of last season, he was leaving to study in Arizona, but he clearly had a change of heart. When he unexpectedly walks through the doors of Sherman Oaks, he's wearing a suit, which suggests he's back in an official capacity.

Talking about the fourth season, Kaling previously told E! why the show won't follow the characters through college.

"Unfortunately, young people grow up and you can't be 17 forever," she explained. "I'm really happy with where we ended with the stories and with the characters' growth.

"It was a very emotional finale. I truly love this world and what the actors brought to these characters. It made it one of the best creative experiences of my life."

In an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com, Lewison said he thinks "season 4 is the best" yet, adding: "I want to tell you everything but I think I'd get in trouble. However, I will say that genuinely... I think each season just gets better and better and better."

Lewison said he thinks the new episodes are so strong because "it is our final season and the writers knew that", meaning they were able "to craft what is the perfect send-off".

But in an interview with Collider, the showrunner did warn that the ending might disappoint some viewers.

"I think there's going to be a subset of people who are disappointed because, you know, the love triangle comes to an end and decisions are made," said Fisher. "But I hope that we did it in a way that even people who may have lost in some sense feel like they won.

"I think we did a good job... but because of that I do feel like we have created a monster that is really 50/50, and people feel very strongly."
